September 2011 - Norwich

Darren presents the winner's trophy to Rob

Friday 16th September

The clouds and occasional rain had gone and the sun was about to shine. The start of another golfing weekend was upon us. With a fairly late tee-off time of 14:30 everyone had plenty of time to get to Norwich. The Patels from the south-west still decided to travel to Leicester the previous night to be bit closer (and spend the night eating curry and drinking beer). Darren still arrived at the course before 10:30 so had several pints in the clubhouse by the time most others arrived.

The groups were drawn by putting balls into a hat and drawing them out. A couple of new faces this time in Ben, Steve (Paddy) and Rich. Paddy brought a cool box with him rammed with cans and proceeded to consume them, with help from others, throughout the round. Ben had a poor front 9, but with help from Paddy's coolbox, had a much better back 9!

As dinner was included in the price we paid for the weekend, and time was getting on a bit, we decided to stay in the hotel for food. Dinner was a carvery of beef, turkey and ham with a decent choice of vegetables and trimmings. Just the job after a tiring round of golf. After that half of the group decided to go out and venture into Norwich whilst the others remained in the hotel bar for a few drinks and a chat, and bed shortly after midnight.

Saturday 17th September

Saturday morning breakfast held some interesting stories of the previous night's adventure. Raj wasn't sure how Paddy had ended up sleeping in his room, and neither was Paddy, other than all he could remember was going to reception to ask what room he was staying in as he couldn't remember and they directed him to Raj's room. Darren turned up later and Raj said to him that someone was already in his bed! Not sure exactly what happened after that as we were all laughing so much as Paddy told the tale of walking Darren down the corridor with only his boxers on holding his trousers in the air saying "get me back to me room I'm going to puke!"

The draw had been made the night before, the weather looked good, and the competition began. The first hole was a tricky dog-leg left par 4 with about 160 - 180 yards to the corner. This proved a difficult hole for some whilst others parred the hole. Again Paddy took round a coolbox of beers which him and Austin got stuck into. An intense 10 - 15 minute downpour of heavy rain about an hour into the round made things difficult for a while but the sun emerged again and continued for the rest of the day.

After the competition and prize giving we all decided to have a "quick snack" in the hotel so we could then head into Norwich. As we'd already paid for dinner we were allowed up to £20 on our snack, so most decided to have steak and chips, which was neither quick, nor really a snack! Anyway, it was quite nice nonetheless. After a bit of a cock-up with the taxis ordered, we eventually got into Norwich. The advance Patel party arrived first, jumped into a pub and ordered a drink. However, when the rest of us got there we tried to get in but the bouncer wouldn't let Ben in so we had to go down the road to find a quieter bar, and get the others to join us after their drink. We might have ended up in a gay-bar, not sure, but stayed sat on my seat! After that half of us went for a curry and the rest carried on round the bars. The curry was ordered by Bip so we could all share and was pretty good, although Bip probably ordered a bit too much. The yogurty mango drink we had the end was very nice.

Sunday 18th September

Sunday's round was at a different course, and with a 10:00 tee-off we had to get up and have breakfast at 8:00 which was hard going after the previous two days. We arrived at Sprowston Manor with not much time to spare, but as we had a couple of people drop out from the Sunday we had a spare tee-off slot anyway so didn't really matter. Darren was going to watch Man Utd v Chelsea, and the weekend's events had finally taken their toll on Paddy, Austin and Hari.

This was a much harder course than Dunston Hall, it was longer and there seemed to be bunkers everywhere! It was a good day which we all enjoyed though. Afterwards we had a drink and quick bite to eat. Couldn't believe they can charge £3.50 for a pint of blackcurrant and lemonade! We all said our farewells, hoped we'd meet up again next year, then set off home.
